QWAK,ICE STORM TEST!!

QWAK,The DUCK NEST is OFF GRID at the moment!:15_1_70v: We got a bad ICE STORM and power has been down about 4 hours.:36_1_25::favorites21:

I should have prepared better:yes::thinkey: The main HD power cord I pland to use got wet and the wet in the 4 jack box kept triping the GFI:36_1_30: on the generator.:favorites21: had to switch a bunch of cords around:wink:

Generator died after 15 min.:dontknow: restarted and was ok don't know why it stoped it just did. :dontknow:

COLD rain and ICE but the DUCK pond is WARM so will ponder and watch on the TV:hahaha: as they try to restore power to about 80,000 who currently have no power and they expect it to get worse as the ice acumulates and trees fall and power lines and poles snap like twigs!:36_1_25:

Could have been better prepared and will be next time:yes: but all in all not a bad test!:s1::15_1_70v:

Good luck.

Some have suggested that a great infrastructure project would be to start putting all those utility lines underground. It would save money on repairs during storms; and, if nothing else, it would be a great "make work" project for the administration.

No doubt. I have been prepping non stop for months now. It looks like my hard work will start paying dividends tonight. The authorities are calling for a class 3 emergency here in Northern Ky and Ohio.

We are expecting up to an inch of ice on top of 6 to 8 inches of snow.

I have the diesel Gen Set fueled and ready . Both of my kerosene heaters are fueled and ready to go. Flashlights and candles in every room. Hundreds of pounds of canned food to go along with lots of stored rice .

50 Gallons of diesel out in the shed and 50 gallons of kerosene.

This is the best thing that could have happened to me right now. It is a sobering reminder that not only am I not done prepping, i am just getting started.

QWAK,The power went out at 8:45am this morning  came back on at 3:15 pm for 45 min. then out agen.:favorites21:

I took a nap with the cat and the dog:yes: when it went off in case they got it back on agen quickly (could happen:wink:) 4:45pm woke up and still no power so started the generator agen and switched all the power cords back to run off the generator.

The local TV station is runing on generator and flash lights! TV wether man says this is the worst ICE STORM in Arkansas history!

Fayetteville Arkansas is requesting DISASTER AERIA status, the govenor wants the whole state declared a disaster aeria!

There is about 1/2" of ICE on every thing and it is still coming down, geting colder and will switch over to heavy wet snow after 8 pm -- it is now 5:38 pm. Going to get a lot worse!

It looks INCREDABLE like a CRISTAL REALITY every thing coated with ice will be MAGNIFICENT to see when the sun comes out!:shine:

Avalon,No TV by the hot tub -- perhaps I can buy a 50" cheep USED later this year after I finish the project -- that is the tenitive plan any way.

We seem to be able to handle ice and snow up here. Do you guys have leaves on the trees now that the ice accumulates on? Good luck down there!

QWAK,Thought I would evaluate some of my survival equipment for you.:thinkey:

Bought 6 emergency lights from Sportsmans guide, each light has battery back up, comes on when power goes off and has a remote switch and runs on 110 ,also has a 12 volt jack. GREAT IDEA!!!:shine: Unfortunately not one of them worked when I needed them to work, not even when pluged in to the generator!:452::36_1_30:

Got an LED lantern with crank generator, from same company --- did not work either!

Emergency LED lights, rechargable with flash light head or 16 LED work light -- not much light and batteries died real fast!

ALL from Sportsmans Guide, made in China and aparently bad /cheep rechargable batteries --- so they work good when NEW but NOT later when you NEED them to work!:36_1_30:

The war surplus stuff threw Sportsmans Guide is GREAT and cheep but the FLASHEY cool stuff that is MADE in CHINA is JUNK I waisted $$$ on is MY evaluation.

I think it would be a good idea:thinkey: if others also TESTED there equipment and posted evaluations:yes:

Just as a penny saved is a penny EARNED --- $$$$ waisted would be BETTER BURNED -- at least you could get WARM!:yes:

Glad the generator is such a success Duck.

I don't think much of those rechargable lanterns either. I bought one that was on sale at the local hardware shop and had to take it straight back, it would not even charge up at all.

I have a second rechargable one that seems OK, it also has a hand crank. But that is pretty pathetic, it takes a lot of cranking to do anything. Though I am by no means solely dependent on it. Personally I am very much in favour of oil lamps . . . and not cheap ones from China either. I have some of those and no matter what I do with them they smoke and flicker.

It is silver and black and says "JEEP" on it. Made in CHINA, but this one realy works GOOD and has held up!

Glad to hear that things are working out for you during your power outage. We had a 10 day outage here in OH back in September that served as a good test of our preps. Luckily, we still had water and the ambient temps weren't that hateful.

For lighting, I had a Harbor Freight 110V powered mechanic's "trouble light" in the kitchen, a AA battery powered camping fluorescent lantern (Eveready brand, I think), and a bunch of baby clip-on LED lights that I, my wife & kids used. For $1.50 each, these proved to be VERY handy. See:

http://countycomm.com/ARES%20SOLED.htm

Don't forget to double-check the oil level in your generator engine from time to time.

STAY WARM!

QWAK,It is my understanding that what they want is a SUPER CONDUCTOR GRID which would have little or no power lose!:thinkey:

That means SILVER POWER LINES that are SUPER COOLED so they have almost zero power loss in transmission!

It is do able but takes a lot of physical SILVER and an eficient way of cooling the power lines.

Aparently they have solved the problems :questionm:dontknow:

A SUPER CONDUCTOR power grid would be doubling the grid capacity with out any new power stations being built!

Natural Gas lines in the Gulf of Mexico are being drawn drawn down, here in Ship Shoal area we have been asked to step up gas production. As long as you can run the furnace blower you should be good with the generator, keep the Duck nest warm and good preping.

QWAK,CajunCoin,I heat with wood got self generating fans on top the wood stove.:s1:

Have back up propane heaters, a 25,000 BTU and 10,000 BTU runing off there own regulators and 30# tanks. Also a tankless propane water heater on its own tank and regulator to add hot water to hot tub/DUCK POND if the wood boiler is heating too slow.

Got 25 Gal of gas for the generator.

Pully was loose and wabbeling so bad I could not get the generator to start!!

This is a perfect example of why it's NOT enough to just "own" a generator, stashing it away in the (unopened) factory box. It's important to know how it functions BEFORE you need it to run. Take it out of the box. Run it for a few hours (under load - electric space heaters work well). Drain the oil & refill it. Test run it every 1-3 months.

I presume you just got the thing, since you'd not even paid for it yet. For others "out there", TEST your generator before you need it.

My cheapie PepBoys 3500W generator ran pretty well for the 10 days we were without power back in September. The only hassles I had were due to my stupidity in adding a gallon or two of oil/gas mixture to the fuel tank (rather than just gasoline) several days into the outage. After removing the spark plug, wire scrubbing the fouling, draining the gas tank, refilling it with new fuel,... the sucker FINALLY started back up.

Have a spare spark plug. Don't try & use up old oddball fuel/oil mixtures in a gasoline-only engine just because it's "running so well."

Re: QWAK,ICE STORM TEST!!

just some thoughts from reading this thread and my experiences from ice storms..and Generators

i have found the easyest way to plug up a Gen is to buy a generator that has a 240 outlet...and wire up a double male ended heavy cord one end plugs into the Gen..the other plugs in at the clothes Dryer plug..(never hook or unhook this line while the gen is running)this will electify all the circuts in the house...you MUST pull the main breaker between the house and the meter so you dont kill a line man working on the line....and of course since a dryer outlet is 30amps you need to not run more than 30amps of usage...but this will heat up all the circuts saving all the cords etc...i also put a TEE in the fuel lines of all my generators with a cut off and i have a 6 gal bottom drawing boat fuel tank i hook up remote to the generator with a inline filter being remote this allows me to refuel the auxilary tank while the generator keeps running.

I have heard backfeeding like i describe with the double male ended cord is ILLEGAL but it does work great and is cheap

on the flywheel thing ..i would expect the bearings will be out of the Gen engine when you are done with it so you might need to have it looked over closely and repaired or replaced

to the one needing to make a fuel run.....do it quick....around here 90% of the gas stations were closed due to lack of power ...the ones running on a Gen set were way backed up and only took cash

GOLDDUCK are you sure that duckpond is 104deg it takes a lotta power to keep those ponds warm (is it gas?)

hope this helps someone

We're doing fine today. I still have my generator running as the power has been going on and off all morning. On for 10-30 minutes and off for about an hour while they repair the next problem. On right now, so I have the net up. One hitch, the internet DSL modem runs very hot on the generator and slows or stops working. so for now I'll only be online while the power is on.

If its not already you might want to run your DSL modem on a UPS........after going through some power/voltage issues during our last ice storm i put anything sensitive on voltage regulated UPS's

you need to be careful with electronics when the grid power starts coming back up we experienced multiple low voltage and temporary outage events and spikes that fried several electrical units and poped fuses in other equipment, i ended up with several electronic devices that insurance ended up replacing

we were using a inverter generator with pure sine wave output during the outage and had no issues you might want to check the voltage your generator is putting out

my gen ( i use the 240v outlet) seems to put out 113v on both legs +/- .2 volts spread and variation between the legs

all the issues came when we went back on the grid

TTAZZMAN 01-29-2009 11:51 AM

Re: QWAK,ICE STORM TEST!!

For those of you going through the power outage

Be sure and keep records of expenditures for insurance purposes such as

Fuel for generators etc

Food that might spoil in freezers and fridges (they will require a detailed list of each item and its replacement value)

Expenses to remove and dispose of Tree Debris

check all electical appliances for low or high voltage damage (lots of items such as DVD players etc will have a small fuse inside the machine at the first circut board where the power enters and is cheaply replaceable)

of course any frozen pipe damage (may not leak till you get things warmed back up)

any emergency services you might require

of course any property damages

Glad you are OK. Did you manage to get more fuel? God help all these people who have no preps whatsoever for this sort of thing. I hope it wakes them up. Hurricane Juan up here woke up a lot of Nova Scotians, but sadly the memory seems to be fading fast at that was going back a few years now.

We're back up now. shut the generator down, rolled up the 300' of extension cords and piled them up for handy deployment. Whole area seems back up for the most part. I have to give the power company at least an A for their work. I had my scanner on and heard reports of power lines down all over the county. I'm heading into town to make that fuel run. Can't relax the preps.

My chickens survived the outage just fine. Funny, they haven't been out of the coop since it all started. Today I got out one of the red heat lights I used when I raised them and put it in there for them. hope they don't get spoiled.

The Ducks area of the country was hit very hard (not very far south of me)...and he was talking his generator pully was a issue and that kind of issue would get worse everytime he would start and stop his Genny

So i am guessing he is short or very limited on power right now...

Good news is the weather is warming up fast so things are melting and less need for heat.....i know our area sent a lot of utility crews down there to help and with this good weather power should get up faster.

I got back ok, roads and streets still either ice covered or patchy, only places were they bare.

I filled my gas cans at Sam's, $1.619 per gallon. Couple others there doing the same thing., don't know if they were still out or just restocking like me.

Our county was under level 3 emergency for a time during this storm. We are not exactly backwoods, more like flatlanders. However, we live out of town aways, so we're not as high a priority as town, it sometimes takes them a while to get us back up.

We're not looking for a warm up enough to do us any good for the next 10 on the weather channel website. So, ice is with us a while.

Hope The Duck gets thawed out real soon and back up. Kind of sucks his generator gave him trouble. As if it's not bad enough that the weather dumped on him.

Thnx. I am glad the Duck found his new genny to be crap NOW. He is not dependent on it, for heat and light, I know that, though it was clearly a bonus for him, but I agree with what he says, some who have bought one might be dependent one for heat.

We had ours right before xmas. We were without 3 days; did ok. Ran the generator, just the well pump, heater, and the furnace. Used our oil lanterns, battery latterns and candles...gas stove to cook off of. We did ok. But I think I want a bigger generator, so I can run the computer too :) We can handle a few days, a few weeks would be aggravating. I'm still dreaming about that natural gas generator that kicks in for the whole house, with the BU wood stove and windmill/solar for the well and pump.

you must have a pretty good sized genny to pull a well pump? how large? did it work ok for the well?

last yr here one of my friends borrowed a genny 30amp 240 and it wouldnt start his pump i think the genny was a 7.5-8 kw and he was thinking he had a 5hp pump

My 6k 30amp ran my pump fine. Not sure if the pump depth matters (120' for this one). He may want to mess around with it a little and see where the problem is. I think that generator should have run it.

Well, our good Duck could be out for a while. Do hope he is OK. He had estimated Saturday for a power restore. I looked up the net and the nearest large community to him is mostly back up but the news item said 'rural areas nearby could remain without service for 'some time'.

The last estimate I saw for 'sometime' meant a week to, gasp, 3 weeks.

Hope the Pond is warm for him and he suffers no more bad equipment failures in the meantime.

Re: QWAK,ICE STORM TEST!!

After reading all of these posts, I am a little shocked. Small inexpensive gas Gensets are not the way to go.

Diesel is want you want. The low rpm models are expensive. If you can't afford one of those , then get a high rpm diesel. At the very least a high rpm diesel if cared for will outlast a similar gas or propane unit by a factor of 10.

And another very important reason to own a diesel genset is the fuel. I am able to store hundreds of gallons of diesel on my property and with the proper PRI additives it will last for years.

I won't have to make any fuel runs even after weeks or possibly months without power.

Luckily for us here in KY, we only lost power for a few hours. I did not even bother firing up the generator. I just got my two kerosene heaters going and that was enough to keep the house in the high 60s. And as for the Kerosene heaters, the same thing applies. I have hundreds of gallons stored . Kerosene and Diesel are extremely easy and stable to store if done right.

I bought a portable kero heater and was amazed how warm it could keep the house. In addition, I have found that it does provide a small light source as well as being a cooking device. I can cook soup and make hot water. I have also put a camping stove on top of it and will heat it to 325 to 350 degrees.

Well, the Duck, unfortunately, has just been the proof of this. It will be interesting to hear what he has to say when he is at last able to rejoin us.

The reason I don't have a generator myself is that I would need a massive one to run a deep well pump and it is just too expensive.

I have also understood that the only good generator is a diesel one. I think people cave in because of the price difference. Clearly a false economy.

When I was reading the net to try to find out what was happening in Duck's area one of the things I read was that some local hardware shops had trucked in a bunch of new small petrol gennies from out of state and they were going wrong in, well - flocks - so to speak, some very angry customers, apparently.

Sorry, I'll disagree. The only "good" generator is one that you currently own, not the one that will take you months/years to save up for.

If you get a cheapie generator (like my 3.5KW Pep Boys unit), try it out BEFORE you need it, have basic consumables (oil, spark plugs), run it under load every month or two, you'll be far better off than somebody who is just planning to get one "some day." You'll also be much better off than a person who buys a generator at any price, and just stores that genset away, never having taken it out of the original box (yes, there are folks like that). Or there's the type of person like my uncle down in Mississippi, who has a mid-sized gas generator, but only a single can of gas (of unknown age). He figures that living so close to gas stations, they'll be able to get gas if they need it. Not quite.

It's easy to store a week's worth of gasoline in steel jerry cans with PRI-G stabilizer, and rotate that through the cars to use it up if needed.

Yes, a nice diesel generator would be better than the 3600RPM small gas engine version.

As with the rules of gunfighting, where rule #1 is "have a gun", my first rule in providing basic power backup to my home is "have a tested generator."

When we were without power here in SW Ohio back in mid-September for 10 days, ours was the ONLY home in our area with any generator power.

You can always get something better, but a reasonable first step is to get something in the first place.

You could be right. Anything is better than nothing. But the Duck's little effort broke down on the first real test of it.

Hey, this prepping thing is a learning curve. At least we on GIM are trying to learn and take it seriously, and to share our mistakes.

It is very hard not to despair at times, but we have to keep trying.:36_3_12:

I run my generators every month under load. The time to test your equipment is before you need it. I know a guy who tells me he will not buy a generator until he can get one big enough to run his entire house, thats all great except what happens when the power goes off now? He and his family sit in the dark and cold wishing they had some type of generator, any type of generator.

I think its a good idea to have a backup for your backup and not put off buying one of the most needed pieces of equipment you will need, and you will need it one day.

I realized how soft we are from having it so easy most of our lives.

But what gets me is that your out there in the bush getting fired upon by mother natche and some ahole in his warm mother's basement is giving you crap about how u spell QUACK? From what I read of the Generator problom it had absolutely nothing to do
with Gas vs. Diesel.. it was a pulley problem.
We always need test our back up system before an emergency hits.

Duck, hope you are doing well.
It sound like hundreds of thousands were caught unprepared and are
leaving their homes.

I hope you didn't have to bail out.

A BIG plus. That guy likes to pi$$ people off just to be a troll. He has done the same thing to me and others. Wish one of the mods would take him on and actually send him back to his mothers basement for good. I've yet to see one post of his that wasn't some type of insult to someone. And, "That's all I got to say about that!"

I really hope The Duck gets his power back soon. He said his genny was a DR I think. I almost bought one of their products, glad i didn't. As for diesel, I've looked at those, but when I needed a generator I had to take what was left and not what I would have liked. For occasional outages, I think a gas generator is fine if you get a good one. I bought my first one (still works) a Honda. Only genny I could find at the time. I have two others now, all three are gas. The others will run more stuff than just the refer and freezer. One my son uses for his house and I've lent out the little one to friends or family when they have outages.

Well, busy day today. Gotta go!

Well, at least I would not be in the cold and dark as I have a number of oil lamps etc and put in a wood cookstove last fall. Also have a kerosene heater and a couple of 'Black Cat' things.

I think what I really need to do here, rather than spend thousands on a genny is to get a hand pump on the well.

Keef, you are certainly right, electricity has spoilt us. Glad to hear you have got your power back. :15_1_70v:

I agree, low rpm diesels are the way to go.

But..... a good gas one will burn all the fuel you have on hand.

Stick with yamaha or honda and make sure they are single cylinder.

Mixing in oil with gas is for 2 stroke engines only.

+1

Our well is over 100 feet deep, and last year was very wet so i don't know how far down the water is in a dry year. The difference in cost between a deep well hand pump and a shallow one are substantial. This is number two on our list (after chickens) this spring. Probably bite the bullet for a deep well pump by Bison just to be sure. We have water in the winter from a very shallow wet hole behind our house and from the roof if its warm enough.

QWAK,Keef,Well we are now back on line /on the GRID and it was mostly an UNNESSARY ADVENTURE as the power grid FAILED mostly because of FAILURE to maintain the RIGHT OF WAYS on PURPOSE!

In 2000 we were down 8 days and the GOV picked up 75% of the cost -- since THEN they have been spraying "AGENT ORNGE" or what ever they renamed it and just killing the vegitation close but only about 20 feet either side of the lines some places less  It is a FIRE DANGER (all the dead dry vegitation) but the 30+ foot trees fall on the lines and DOWN they go! They are suposed to maintain a 60 foot rite of way!!

They spend about the same amount of $$$ as IF they cut the trees back yearly BUT the FED. GOV pickes up 75% of the TAB and the guys doing the work get payed DOUBLE and TRIPLE TIME so they tend to MILK THE JOB for all it is worth!

It was a good test of EQUIPMENT systems and PEOPLE!:shine:

I did a bunch of NEW "NOTHING DAYS" so I had fun doing MY thing:wink::yes: Got to say I was disapointed that SOoooooooooo many were just like COWS MOOING -- saying "FEED ME" not realising that THEY "ARE the FOOD" and the GOVERNMENT is the one raising and maintaining THEM as "LIVE STOCK"!!

A fiew got some MREs -- IF they were part of the local social structure I did not.

Speaking of MREs they had two truck loads full up in Fayetteville but did not hand them out because SOME had little packs of POSABLY tainted PEANUT BUTTER!:36_1_30:

Welcome back DUCK, my power was only off about 2 days and we got through it fine.

The sad thing about those mooing cows is they will only demand the gov't do more for them, instead of waking up and prepping. The DR. people did get called once I found and riged up a very old phone last MONDAY! Said they would send me a new generator but friday when I called it had not shiped yet (most likely they sold a lot of generators with the storm!:4_1_72:)

I did have one gadgit I got cheep at LOWS last summer and I should have bought 5 of them!

It is a "Black and Decker" emergency light for the car. Runs on 6 "AA" batteries has 18 brite LEDs in the main light that can be all on or just 12 or 6 plus a long goose neck arm with 2 independent brite LEDs.:shine:

A lot of light ware and as much as needed to actualy do somthing!:shine:

I think I payed $9.00 for it because no body bought them original price was 429.00 If I remember right and I just bought it as a whim because they had so many and so cheep.

Made in China of corse but fairly rugged and with the magnetic clip or using the jaws easly positioned and the goose neck arm was GREAT!:s1:

The only change I would make to IT would be to replace the magnetic tray arm with another 3 LED light and a 12 volt adaptor plug for external power!:thinkey:

It's an LED headlamp by Energizer. Has multiple options--high beam, low beam, red.

Much more convenient than a flashlight, and you never have to set it down to be able to do something with your hands.

QWAK,Lots of things did not work as I had planed -- best layed plans of DUCKS and MEN as they say!

I bought 10 -- 20 watt floresent lights that can run on 110 and SHOULD come on when power fails, runing on small 12 volt rechargable batteries of the 7 tried -- 7 FAILED but could be run on 12 volts off of a deep cicle battery ,once I riged up home made cords with proper size jacks.

Also a CRANK UP LANTERN (12 LED) battery would not charge!

Both from Sportsmans Guide.:36_1_28:

A big "TRIPP" inverter -- would not INVERT  don't know why, opened it up and nothing was burned and all fuses OK??:questionm:dontknow:

A small inverter in my Tahoe (but I think I killed it by reversing polarity wile I was hooking it up):dontknow:

My 4 "D" cell "MAG-LITE" did not work and no aparent reason?

Got a couple temp and weather devices that did not work properly easpecialy the automatic TIME part. I had to add 1:15 to the time it was displaying -- drove me a little CRAZY and could not find the instruction manual to reset it! LOL:confused_ma:

Like I said IF the pully had NOT come off the generator it would have been NO BIG change HERE!

I bought 5 NATO 5 gal JERRY cans and they need a special flex spout, the one I bought was cheeply construcyed so ware it latched on to the can did not seal properly so LEAKED GAS when filling the generator--- NOT a GOOD thing!! Some lady in town blew her self up and burned much of her house FILLING a HOT GENERATOR!! A little spilled GAS is a BIG NO NO!!:36_1_30:

QWAK, I just talked to the lady that delivers the mail out here -- THEY got some MREs yesterday (day 12) the local volenteer fire department had them but was NOT handing them out -- left overs from the 2000 ICE STORM so they did not REQUEST new MREs and when they did hand them out RATIONED the old ones to two meals per person!

They had hot meals IN the fire station free to who could get down to THEM but did NOT offer them the MREs but rather localy cooked food which the GOV will of corse PAY them!

The roads were BAD but pasable since the first day -- people out here cleared the roads them selves so they COULD have been delivering MREs and water for at least 10 days!

Some call that local volenteer fire department the "FOUNDATION SAVERS" -- as that is all they ever SAVE once a fire starts!!

I shot a bunch on my cam corder but can't up load it to the net because of computer problems.

Got a great clip of the mail delivery lady with a baby "RAZOR BACK PIG" her boys cought just befor the storm after the mother was shot (hunting) and all the others ran off. That is one HECK of a well pump!

We have a 150 ft 4 inch well with a 1 1/2hp submerged pump. Our 6500 watt china diesel genset runs the well just fine, as well as pretty much all the lighting and the septic at the same time.

Sounds like his starting capacitor on his well may have been out.

Re: QWAK,ICE STORM TEST!!

Welcome back Duck!! Sounds like you got a lot of kinks in the system located, while your overall good prep level kept you (and some others) comfy. I bet DR will make it right for you.

I'm one of those with an untested modest gas generator new in the box, but in my defense, it is a Honda, which has a good reliability reputation, and I am saving for a bigger natural gas/ propane one. I think my resale of my Honda will be highest new in the box. So unless I need it I'm not firing it up. I keep both vehicles topped up and have can and siphon to fill the Honda if need be.

On more people prepping: my wife is looking at a kitchen and home gadgets catalog she gets and it has rain barrels and solar and LED emergency lights. I think hurricanes and ice storms have more people thinking prep. The way prep food is selling is one indicator... but this catalog is mostly cute matching pots and pans or canisters or yard ornaments or... well more low brow fashion than serious items and prep gear there is fully mainstreamed.

We adore headlamps. Our first open to change the batteries with a knurled metal screw, which rocks. I bought 2 with more LEDs in a Browning brand and you had to bend (and maybe break) the plastic case to open them. I never got the first one out of its plastic case open so I sent both back. How useful are LEDs that last forever if you shatter the device fast or can't get batteries in at all? So I advise a close inspection. It also combined instructions for headlamps, flashlights, cap lights and keychain lights in one tiny page in english and french. The putting in batteries part for multiple headlamps was a stamp size pic that did not tell you what direction to pull after you bent the plastic. Sheesh! From Browning! But good headlamps rock!

Yes it is a shame Dawn did not recognizes the talent innate in her difference.

He is kind of embarrassed about it, as he sees GIM as a rather intellectual 'older persons' site, though he lurks. But I hope your spelling is an inspiration to those, of all ages, who fear to post and think they look foolish as for one reason or another they cannot spell.

Your ideas surpass your capacity to spell, Duck Egg, and I think we are all glad that you think, and post, 'outside the box'. You also have taught us all here to look beyond the spelling etc to see the message.

If it is really a 5hp pump, and an 8Kw generator, I'm not surprised it wouldn't start it. The starting current would be way too much for the genny. It would RUN it fine, constantly - but not actually start it running!

Oh, PS - I have 3 large generators so don't need to worry about power - but if I only had one, I would pick up one of the cheap and nasty 800W ones they sell for about $70.
Complete trash, but as a backup they would run what you REALLY needed for baseline comfort - heat and lights, assuming you didn't have electric heating.

Re: QWAK,ICE STORM TEST!!

Duck, be very careful about those 55 gal drums with that much age. I had some and they developed leaks over time. Seems rust mites like to eat on them worse than a regular fuel tank. I got tired of storing diesel in those 5 gallon plastic containers and bought a home heating oil tank to keep it in. Diesel #2 is the same oil as home heating oil #2. Expensive one time project, but from the first fill up you start saving money and your back. Just a thought.

As for spelling, I always did so poorly at it in school that I think I was labeled, (not sure what), but until I started pulling 100% grades in math and near that in science, the teachers thought I was too dumb to learn. Some actually said it out loud. That really hurt especially with peer pressure. They didn't quite know what to label me after that. With me, it was their method of teaching not my ability to learn. I do not spell well even today, THANK YOU FIREFOX! The spell check in Firefox is always tripping me up and so I have to go over what I type and correct the mistakes before I post. Just continue being THE DUCK that we've all come to know and love.

Good Lord, Duck!

I meant to mention to you that I read on other sites about your storm that in your state all beds were full, in most hospitals. Due to chain saw accidents and to people who had fallen over and been in MV accidents in the ice. ALSO due to numerous suicide attempts.

I also read that the classified ads were full of people -er I mean that term lightly - selling brand new gennys, they had just bought, the second the power came back on in the towns. Might be a good time to buy a spare? Check the ads, pal.

Keep safe, Duck Egg.

Just be sure to live dangerously, more carefully, as you said in you hilarious quote today on another thread.:9536:

No kidding. A friend of mine tears down old barns and warehouses for some pay and the materials. He gets some beams from when old growth huge trees still existed that are like iron. I understand 'Old Ironsides' the oak tall ship better after inspecting those beams.

He then builds with them like you do. He has sold one house, built the one they live in, one they rent, and one their daughter and her husband are buying from them.

He could build more if he used more help, but he enjoys doing as much himself as possible.

Re: QWAK,ICE STORM TEST!!

Not for gas though Fullpower - I think most gas is 10% ethanol now in the US? That will soften and flake any paint eventually - it even does it to virtually every epoxy (including JB-Weld) or fuel tank repair coating on the market, apparently (not from experience) - one called "Red-Kote".
You don't want flaky paint in your gas.
If they held hospital grade ethanol they should be just fine if sealed correctly - seal them, then paint the seal and the ouside with bitumen paint and they should be fine for a couple of years if the duck uses stabiliser.

Flap, Duck Egg!

ANOTHER storm? And you haven't even got your duff genny replaced yet? The fun never stops down your way, does it?

Be sure to anchor yourself in the Pond in anticipation of this tornado. At least you got a chance to refill it.

Don't want you blowing all the way to Oz just yet.:553:

How's Cat-rina going on with her 'nesting' activities? I hope you are going to post the results on the 'Cool Cat of the Day' thread.

We got about 3/4" of rain so far but MISSED the "GOLF BALL HAIL" that did hit about 40 miles from here!

IT will come in WAVES tonight!

I shure am glad I bought that SILVER FIRE FIGHTER out fit from the surplus place as I almost EXPECT --- FIRE and BRIM STONE -- NEXT!:111::4_1_72::shine:

Duck man? How u with company?

I was lookin at the map and ur cabin is only a day's drive from where I live (central kentuck). In fact, I got shellacked by the same ice storm as you, enjoyed living on preps for three days.

Truth is, I didn't enjoy it and it came as a 'wake up' call to get more serious about preps.. Alot was mental/emotional and we prepare little in those areas, most everything is centered on physical survival. But when Max reported all those suicides in ur state I realized how soft we are from the lack of adversity in modern life.

Anyhow, I was thinkin about visiting ur health spa this summer if ur open to the company. We have no idea how bad this collapse is going to be. There may be a need for folks like us to band together for mutual self defense. We hope it doesn't get that bad, but I am studying every possible scenerio..

If I came to visit I would be sure to bring some local produce.. trade items. It would be nice to sit down and talk face to face with someone that understands the situation we are in. I am tired of the small talk w/sheeple.

I have a feeling if we really knew the future, exactly what would happen, we would be preparing retreat farms while it is still easy. I saw a little of how hard life could get in that ice storm. The average overwieght american ain't ready for that shite.

Anyhow bro. Thanks for adding alot to the board n stay in touch..

Just a weekend car trip. Would be a good excuse to pull out the camping gear, I have a ton of stuff I never used.

Probobly would be late summer, by that time we may have an idea of how ugly this is gonna get.

Then we can smokus pufus on the peace pipe n forget about it... hahaha..

I stopped planning vacations after last year. Now it's about networking with as many people as I can about survival.

So, we will see what happens bro.. Hopefully all the roads are cleared out by then..

Called on the EMERGENCY floresent lights and I can return them but got to find the original shiping orders and pay to ship them back.

Lots of stuff to fix or repair or replace -- that is why the ice storm was such a good TEST! Best to KNOW NOW rather than later when there are fiew if any options.

QWAK, , I went looking foran old WW2 "hand crank" generator for you could not find one BUT found some other GOODIES and the prices are good.

I have bought a lot of stuff from them and never had any problems.:s1:

http://store.colemans.com/cart/emerg...ucts-c-13.html

They can even get you a "DUCE and a HALF" if you want one (I would like to have one  )

You may want to call them.

The old hand crank generator they used to power radio equipment was almost INDESTRUCTABLE and could be adapted to wind or water power if you were a little creative.

I believe they do make small -- made in China (PLASTIC gear) hand crank generators to recharge phone and pc batteries but I dbout they would hold up to long term use.:dontknow:

I am going to call them my self --- I think I may want to buy a "BODY BAG"

http://store.colemans.com/cart/gi-st...bag-p-474.html

They say it is big enough for a MOOSE LOL --- I'm thinking it could be just the thing for the NEW 10 man ARTIC TENT! :)

So did the tornadoes and golf ball sized hail and the fire and brimstone and plague of frogs and all that pass you by last night?

What about Tazzmann?

It seems they had 'fun' with it all in Oklaholma last night, and some fatalities, unfortunately.

Glad you made out OK, and that you didn't have to row to the commode.

You've never mentioned 'The River or Fire' before, unusual sort of water feature?:bear_happy:

I have an inverter and a deep cycle battery that supposedly is there to run my sump pump in the cellar if the power fails while it is lashing down here. Well, last time that combination occurred, about a year ago, I had the opposite problem to you. My inverter was just fine, but the battery had discharged. :banghead: My stupid fault for not checking it regularly. The cellar filled up to about a foot deep amazingly fast and it was very surprising what sort of things started floating about - a cardboard box with snow chains in it? Now have one of those trickle chargers for the battery.

Have you made any progress with replacing the inverter?

Pity the rats got your dingy. Did they get your parachute too?

QWAK,Max,I thought I had described "the RIVER of FIRE" LOL

When I started the addition to the original cabbin the SINK,TUB and CAMMODE were OUT SIDE -- I built the walls and roof around and over them!:confused_ma:

I had a BAD dranage problem with the DIRT FLOOR so with GOD/NATURE and GRAVITY --- and LOTS and LOTS of water from the well  over the years removed ALL the dirt and loose rock down to BED ROCK!

Puerly by CHANCE :questionm in the bedrock it self there is a DEEP cravase about 18" wide and about 4' deep that runs across the "FLOOR" from a stone wall I built -- over yo the BATH TUB now built in to a STONE WALL -- it makes a dog leg in front of the tub and under the back of the tub in to a NATURAL almost SQUARE SUMP -- it even has a STEP I can stand on IN the sump when servicing the sump pump.

The SUMP PUMP can either pump the water out side and down in front of the cabin OR by closing a VALVE flow threw a flexable pipe back over to that WALL and down the surface as a WATER FALL! :)

I riged the water fall and the cravass with RED and ORNGE and PURPLE rope lights that shine up threw the water! :hahaha: THAT is my "RIVER of FIRE" :111::4_1_72: LOOKS AWSOME at NIGHT and with the light I don't step in the CRAVASS and break my LEG! I got a big slab of rock I got to move to replace the 2 2"x10" planks I now use as a bridge. I also got a "SMOKE MACHEAN" like people use at halloween parties!

I have a RAMP out of a glass sliding door of the cabin, IN TO the GREEN HOUSE BATH and the end of that ramp is on a STONE ISLAND wnen the water level is high enough. I have lights out lining the stone ISLAND -- I call it "FIRE ISLAND" :hahaha::111::4_1_72:

I need to remove some STONE from the bottom of the wall so that even with out the pump, the water will NOT get high enough to be a problem.

ALL just natural PLUMBING -- I got SPRINGS that let water IN and a RESTRICTION that don't let it back out -- MY OOPS -- nature is ALWAYS right and arguing with HER is a LOSER eventualy!:111::4_1_72::shine:

I tend to be slightly "UNCONVENTIONAL" in the way I see and DO things :4_1_72::4_1_72::15_1_70v:

so all is good here..

Glad you are OK. It sounded really ugly in Oklaholma the other night.

I was looking about for info on it all that night Duck was on watch, and fell across some chap's 'my space' page in Lone Grove. The place that got wiped out down there.

'I like to chase thunderstorms with my car and see if I ever get to watch a tornado touch down.'

Hmmm? 'Dear Santa . . . ' A case of being careful what you pray for, if ever I heard one. I wonder if this guy has been tied to a lamp post and is being stoned by the locals right now? 'FAIL!', as TA would put it.:452:

I really pray that guy and his wife and two kids and pets (though he was a bit down on the cat - hiss!) as described on his site did not get what he prayed for, a real close up look. As that tornado going about Oklaholma in the dark the other night sounded really big and BAD.

No, you have never described your 'water feature' to me before. Maybe I should put some fairy lights up next to the positive tap of leak that runs through my foundation walls in my cellar? And get a smoke machine too?

QWAK,argentos,I bought the ten man artic tent as posable STORAGE or HOUSING should I have to take people in (a tradition in my family:wink:) I know a fiew people who can or likely will become homless.

The tent came in a card board box that is not suitable storage and it is hard to move the 150 lb. tent that way --- in a BODY BAG with carry straps it should be easy to move and ZIPS closed to keep the tent clean and criters OUT!:thinkey:

The OTHER "BODY BAG" is to be CREATIVE WITH and perhaps have a little FUN!:confused_m::shine:

I got the LOCALS BUFFALOWED :shine: After they killed 3 of my pets I let it be KNOWN that I was a CRAZY PTSD NAM VET (which I sort of am:wink:) I did a lot of SHOOTING --- TRIMING the TREES:yes: with a 12 gage shot gun and OO buck! an asortment of things so they would THINK a lot HARDER befor KILLING my pets in the future!

I hope she keeps to her previous 2-3 litter size though. 5 is rather intense. Paula and Bruno's litter were 5, actually six, but one died. Things were pretty crazy for a while. You should worm her, I meant to send you something for that, as I have a load of vet preps, but keep forgetting. Though I do not know the rules on worming pregnant queens. Can easily find out though.

Check this out for colds, human (or Duck/Goose) colds, that is, it works very well for me:

I am not sure if it is only available in Canada or not, but it is a Canadian company.

I do not know Duck re the Diesel!!!

The first one I had, an antique one, a really big one, with a double wick, I ran on Kerosene and it made the house stink like the ramp of Heathrow. I dislike Kerosene heaters for exactly the same reason. The refreshing scent of 'JET A', or something thereabouts.

Ever since I have ONLY used purpose made lamp oil - clear - not coloured for choice. My lamps never stink on that. Any time I see it on sale I buy bottles and bottles. I would actually really like to know, from some expert on here, how long lamp oil keeps, and under what conditions, as I have bottles all over the place. Indoors, out in the shed.

I think you would be better off with cooking oil than Diesel.

I have heard they can run on paint thinner too, recently heard that, and I have yet to test it. But I would imagine that would stink too.

We always had paraffin (kerosine) lamps for power cuts when I was a child. Provided the wick is trimmed regularly and kept short so the flame is not allowed to smoke, they don't stink much.

Better than our great-great-grandparents' time when loadsa peeps used whale oil.

Yep, diesel will work fine though it is a little more sooty - if you have a mantle lamp then turn it up a bit now and again to clean the mantle. If not, just crack a window open! I run my cars, my lamps, my boiler all on diesel..

QWAK,argentos,A good clip! Not the first clip I have seen of a dog climbing a tree and I find it interisting at the moment as I am watching a program deling with the EVOLUTION of Whales and Bears both of which started out as a WOLF like creature.

The first BEAR was not much biger than that dog and lived mostly in the trees so the biger carnavores would not EAT it! IT evolved in to a bear that could and posably did EAT GRIZLEY size smaller bears for breakfast! IT died off, agen because conditions changed and IT could not ADAPT and the smaller bears COULD and they are the ancestors of the modern bears we see today.:thinkey:

It is the ability to ADAPT and some "unusual ABILITIES" CAN become the diference between SURVIVING and NOT!:thinkey:

RIGID thinking that shuts out alternitive posabilities is a KILLER in lots of ways!:thinkey::shine:

Seeing things in diferent ways and from diferent perspectives = OPTIONS that one does NOT have with a CLOSED MIND -- so NO solutions seem POSABLE!:452::36_1_30:

There are INFINATE posabilities but ONLY when we decide to CHANGE our MINDS and NOT lock our selves in to what is CONVENTIONAL and the accepted NORM!:shine:

Sort of like my "BODY BAG" -- to "TENT bag" adaptation :111: HE HE HE :shine: ALL that realy matters is "does IT work or NOT":questionm and IF it does and IS better:questionm then it is a GOOD idea.:thinkey:

The ability to ADAPT and reconfigure what we have in to WHAT we NEED will be a deciding factor in WHO manages to SURVIVE in an EMERGENCY of any kind and we live in CHANGING times ware emergencies are becoming NORMAL!:shine:

If I were younger and healthier I could adapt in whatever way is needed if or when TSHTF, but I am resigned to the idea that I shall not be a survivor. No problem there.

What annoys me is that my children do not understand (or maybe want to understand) what is coming, although it is halfway here already. :bear_rolleyes:

That must be just frightful, Argentos.

I used to feel I was pretty up for this sort of lark, like the Duck is, UNTIL I went Hypothyroid. Now constantly exhausted and dependent on meds, which are still not right for me.

Have had rabies about my best friend and her kid on here, and deleted a post today. But who the foxtrot, was I most likely to want to help? Not having kids of my own, or an extended family. Her and her sprog.

She is 'eyes in the headlights' though.' It is NOT going to happen, it can't, it can't! My son is too young!' Like THAT is the only factor on God's earth.

I feel sad to have a 'crash stead' such as it is, no Tn Andy job, but it is better than many set ups, and no takers. I love the Duck's ideas, but when you are not well yourself, and know it, it is hard.

Not a good time to have old friends pull the 'ostrich'. Though I have great friends long distance, did anyway, before my net days, just by working all over the place, and made more, on GIM. I feel the long distance factor.

QWAK,Update on STORM RECOVERY

Both fayetteville and Springdale came out today an anounced that OUT OF STATE CONTRACTORS will get the job of cleaning up all the down trees and tree limbs dispite 35 LOCAL bids for the jobs!:36_1_25:

They were notified by FEAMA that IF the work was not done to FEMA specifications :452::36_1_30:ther would be NO 75% reembursment for the expences!

FEMA suplied a list of companies THEY found ACCEPTABLE!:rant:

You misunderstand. I'm just unfit really. Nowhere near as sick as you with your thyroid.

But once you are past retirement age and are not 100% you are not going to be a survivor if food, safe water, medical care, medicine, etc are in short supply and you have to fight to defend what you have.

That's just a fact and not really anything to worry too much about! I might step in front of a bus tomorrow.

I had six cans of soup I had found on sale on the kitchen table today, which I had stuck little labels on with date purchased.

My neighbour said 'What are you going to do with these?' I think he was actually asking in terms of recipe advice, he is an old bachelor.

Good bloody question, though . . . Real answer 'find somewhere to put them!':4_1_72: Why they are on the table in the first place! I am running out of viable spaces.

I guess, with a double body bag, it could come in handy, if you get thrown in the chiller, but are not quite toast, and have a friend in the bag too. So long as he/she is likewise, not quite toast.

Flap Duck,

I have had a laugh looking up the links for 'Binky' for you.

All these years I have been spelling my Jeep's name wrong, though it was 'Binkie'.

I called 'him' Binky as I thought it was such an insane Jeep, when I got it, that it did not deserve to be given a serious name. It is white. I didn't plan to keep it, but after my Land Rover importation failures it stuck. Very fond of Binky now. He is a good Jeep.

I have sent for another copy of 'Mort' which I leant to someone and never got back, as happens. Write off as 'Nothing Day' present, and another Terry Pratchett novel about Death called 'Reaper Man'. I just have to find out how it is that Death is a cat lover.:111:

I was trying to find a good pic of Binky to link, but have failed. I saw a GREAT pic in a book of 'fantasy lit' art once. I loved it! But the book was too expensive to justify the one pic I wanted.

I came across a cross stitch project of Binky on the net though last night.:4_1_72:

My kind of sewing project, but those counted cross stitch things cross my eye. I only do very small ones, at a push, this one was BIG.

Perhaps just some CAMO make up from MY GI JOE stuff?:questionm :dontknow:

If this is an ALACE in WONDERLAND reality :questionm then --- MOVE OVER ALACE! Theres a NEW DUCK in TOWN  and a WHOLE NEW STORY --- all the SAME charactors -- but DIFERINT!

Wait till the QUEEN of HEARTS sees her "BODY BAG" -- I am shure it will be a PRICLESS moment:wink: and charged on a CREDIT CARD TOO!:hahaha::36_3_13::cry1:

Binky is 'Death's' white horse in the Terry Pratchett 'Discworld' novels. Particularly featured in 'Mort' and 'Reaper Man', 'Death' and Binky. You being in the UK, I would have thought you would have known that!

'Twiglet of the Gods' would fit right in with those novels. If you haven't read them you would no doubt get a laugh.

AND the missing "BODY BAG" too!:4_1_72::shine:

BTW: I ordered all the things at the bottom too,the surgons scrub brushes are GREAT -- over the years I had 6 or 8 I scrounged when I worked in hospitals and they last for ever but old girl friends etc. talked me out of them. Also suture nedles and tape and tarp bags. Shiping costs a lot for the heavy stuff but worth IT!

Hi Duck Egg,

Yes my Binky might consider your own 'pale horse', 'Silver', to be a near relative, if seen in the right light.

We had better keep them apart, imagine the result if they were to breed? A cross between a Tahoe and a Jeep? Almost as horrific as a cross between a Duck and a Goose.

Well do post a photo of this 'Reaper Man' cossy of yours once you get it in the mail.:cry1:

That should keep the neighbours off your pets!:shine:

I believe I tried one donkey's years ago and found it didn't quite gel for me.

Sir Terry Pratchett has been all over the press and telly recently. He has early Alzheimers and is campaigning for better awareness and treatment. Not just campaigning; he has given 1/2 a million GBP of his own money to the cause.

Had NO idea he was now a 'Sir'.

Well he did not really do it for me, either, UNTIL I read 'Mort', which I did find hysterical. Binky.:111: I think Pratchett is a mixed bag, but when he gets it right, he is very funny indeed.

I believe 'Guards, Guards!' and 'Men at Arms' are also very good, the 'dragon' novels in that series, but have not read them.

'Mort', and all the stuff with the horse, cracked me up though, and have just on the strength of this silly thread and Duck's fancy dress sent for 'Reaper Man' as I want to find out how it is that Death is a cat lover.:shine:

Let me know when you find out. That'll save me wading through the book.

Hmm

More about Alice.

"Who borrows the Medusa's eye

Resigns to the empirical lie,

The knower petrifies the known,

The subtle dancer turns to stone."
