Some have suggested that a great infrastructure project would be to start putting all those utility lines underground. It would save money on repairs during storms; and, if nothing else, it would be a great "make work" project for the administration. |

Re: QWAK,ICE STORM TEST!!
No doubt. I have been prepping non stop for months now. It looks like my hard work will start paying dividends tonight. The authorities are calling for a class 3 emergency here in Northern Ky and Ohio.
We are expecting up to an inch of ice on top of 6 to 8 inches of snow. I have the diesel Gen Set fueled and ready . Both of my kerosene heaters are fueled and ready to go. Flashlights and candles in every room. Hundreds of pounds of canned food to go along with lots of stored rice . 50 Gallons of diesel out in the shed and 50 gallons of kerosene. This is the best thing that could have happened to me right now. It is a sobering reminder that not only am I not done prepping, i am just getting started. |

Going to get a lot worse! It looks INCREDABLE like a CRISTAL REALITY every thing coated with ice will be MAGNIFICENT to see when the sun comes out!:shine: Avalon,No TV by the hot tub -- perhaps I can buy a 50" cheep USED later this year after I finish the project -- that is the tenitive plan any way. Max,CAT-TRENA is geting spoiled -- she had milk and summer sauge then took a nap ignoring the storm as long as she is dry and warm, smart cat!:shine: Jimfrancisco, I bought a DR. Re: QWAK,ICE STORM TEST!!
I'm in Wisconsin. I got a little 3 day unscheduled vacation at work (if you know what I mean) and with that hooked up to a weekend I was going to make a run straight south to see what warm weather is like again. Maybe as far as Kentucky. Guess I better rethink this? :confused_m:
We seem to be able to handle ice and snow up here. Do you guys have leaves on the trees now that the ice accumulates on? Good luck down there! |
Re: QWAK,ICE STORM TEST!!
QWAK,LowDow,No leaves on the trees:452: just thick ICE!
The pine trees are FLAT:yes: they just lay over or break off from the ice! I have seen ice up north,I am from chicago but down here wnen the conditions are right the ICE just coats every thing and keeps building till somthing breaks! It realy is SPECTACULAR when the sun comes out - like another WORLD!:shine: the DUCK |
Re: QWAK,ICE STORM TEST!!
Duck, sel your genny while the market is high and buy an Onan - it'll last forever, and you will always be able to buy parts. CCK for a petrol one. It'll run happily on 2-stroke mix if that is all you have.
|
Re: QWAK,ICE STORM TEST!!
QWAK,Jimfrancisco,I havent even payed for it yet:452: or even broken it in,this is the first time I have used it and I am happy with its preformance.
The generator plugs in to a 15 hp kowasaki motor that is self propelled so it can WALK ware ever I want it. The mowing deck on the same engen takes down 12' tall tree 3" in diamiter -- EATS THEM and I have not even mouted the HD BLADE YET!:452: So far I am a happy camper!:yippee::15_1_70v: the DUCK |
Re: QWAK,ICE STORM TEST!!
How far south do you have to go right now to get to some warm weather?
:36_1_63:......................................... ......................................:shine: |
Re: QWAK,ICE STORM TEST!!
That's handy, a generator that is self-propelled - it takes 4 people to comfortably lift an Onan CCK, let alone move it!

"I cut him some slack a year or two back when he hit the Tahoe" = Treat me good and I'll treat you better".

Re: QWAK,ICE STORM TEST!!
QWAK,Thought I would evaluate some of my survival equipment for you.:thinkey:
Bought 6 emergency lights from Sportsmans guide, each light has battery back up, comes on when power goes off and has a remote switch and runs on 110 ,also has a 12 volt jack. GREAT IDEA!!!:shine: Unfortunately not one of them worked when I needed them to work, not even when pluged in to the generator!:452::36_1_30: Got an LED lantern with crank generator, from same company --- did not work either! Emergency LED lights, rechargable with flash light head or 16 LED work light -- not much light and batteries died real fast! ALL from Sportsmans Guide, made in China and aparently bad /cheep rechargable batteries --- so they work good when NEW but NOT later when you NEED them to work!:36_1_30: The war surplus stuff threw Sportsmans Guide is GREAT and cheep but the FLASHEY cool stuff that is MADE in CHINA is JUNK I waisted $$$ on is MY evaluation. I think it would be a good idea:thinkey: if others also TESTED there equipment and posted evaluations:yes: Just as a penny saved is a penny EARNED --- $$$$ waisted would be BETTER BURNED -- at least you could get WARM!:yes: HELP SAVE fellow GIMers --- "Don't let them BUY bad EQUIPMENT" -- that alone could SAVE there LIVES! Bad equipment you CAN'T trust can KILL YOU, when you MUST trust that it will work PROPERLY! :shine: the DUCK |
Re: QWAK,ICE STORM TEST!!
Do hope all GIMers in the effected areas are safe and warm. I have just read that there are 600,000 customers without power and that it is anticipated that it will be 'days' before it is restored. Also 19 people have been killed in total, deaths is various different states.
Glad the new generator is still holding up Duck. |
Re: QWAK,ICE STORM TEST!!
QWAK,Max,Just checked phone is dead,no big suprise realy:wink::111:
With the generator the sat dishes work fine for the TV and puter but roof top antennas don't or have been badly damaged every ware! Just walked around out side with cam corder -- going to take some effort just to be able to clear the tree limbs from the drive way to the road! It is 17 out side,64 inside and 104 in the DUCK POND,with 62 in the pond room,we are doing GREAT!:shine: Mostly just an inconvience and of corse another FUN ADVENTURE for ME!:111::4_1_72: In years passed I just had flash lights and the stove --- way more FUN this way with a GENERATOR!:shine: Shure glad I gave that EMERGENCY pack to the lady that delivers the MAIL! Talked to her yesterday on the land line and she was planing to TRY and get out and DELIVER! Shure hope she did not even TRY! IF she does that milar blanket and heat pack could save HER life or some one else that is stranded! the DUCK |
Re: QWAK,ICE STORM TEST!!
Glad the generator is such a success Duck.
I don't think much of those rechargable lanterns either. I bought one that was on sale at the local hardware shop and had to take it straight back, it would not even charge up at all. I have a second rechargable one that seems OK, it also has a hand crank. But that is pretty pathetic, it takes a lot of cranking to do anything. Though I am by no means solely dependent on it. Personally I am very much in favour of oil lamps . . . and not cheap ones from China either. I have some of those and no matter what I do with them they smoke and flicker. |
Re: QWAK,ICE STORM TEST!!
QWAK,Max,I have another LED lantern that runs on 4 "D" batteries and it works quite well and has a REMOTE that realy works, so it is DIMABLE to concerve batteries, provides aeria light and it has a COOL push button remote! Have used it about 6 years now and works GREAT!:s1:
It is silver and black and says "JEEP" on it. Made in CHINA, but this one realy works GOOD and has held up! Got gas lanterns and oil lamps as alternet options too of corse. The more OPTIONS you got -- the more managable the PROBLEMS -- even real BIG ONES!:shine::111::4_1_72::15_1_70v: the DUCK ---- ( HE HE HE and they said I was CRAZY:confused_m: --) |
